* Bike to Work Day is Thursday, May 18 *
The Bay Area’s 12th annual Bike to Work Day is happening on Thursday, May 18th 2006. Bike to Work Day organizers aim to honor every kind of bicyclist – from new or leisure cyclists to bicycle enthusiasts – during the entire month of May, which is National Bike Commute Month. This year, a “Bike Commuter of the Year” was chosen from each of the nine Bay Area counties to receive a Metropolitan Transportation Commission award, in recognition of their exemplary commitment to bicycle commuting.
The Bike Commuter of the Year of Contra Costa County is Rob Hawks, of Richmond. Rob rides his bike eighteen miles every day to and from his job, Apelon in Alameda. Rain or shine! Not only is Rob dedicated to using his two wheels for transportation trips but he is also very generous with his time. He helps others learn to ride their bikes and is always willing to assist with bicycle maintenance. Phil Morton, a friend of Rob’s says, “I can’t think of anyone more devoted to bicycling. Rob is truly a worthy Bike Commuter of the Year!”
Bay Area residents are encouraged to register now for Bike to Work Day at 511.org. Those who pledge on 511.org to bike at least once during Bike to Work Week, May 15-19, will be eligible to win prizes including a new bicycle or other great bike-related prizes. Information about Bike to Work Day— including locations of Energizer Stations in each county, finding bike routes, taking bikes on transit, the Team Bike Challenge, special events, and locating a bike buddy — can be found at 511.org.
Bike to Work Day organizers are launching an online bike commuting competition called “Team Bike Challenge.” Teams consisting of five individuals will track their bike trips during the month of May, and the team with the most points at the end of the month will win a bike rack to be placed in a location of their choice.
The San Francisco Bay Area’s Bike to Work Day 2006 promotions are being organized by the Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, county congestion management agencies, county bicycle coalitions, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and hundreds of local volunteers. For more information, visit 511.org or call 511 and say “Bicycling.” Hop on your bike and go!
